March 30 Happy Birthday Paul Williams

Happy Birthday Paul Williams (Real name: Paul Humphrey) born, March 30, 1935, from Wythe County, Virginia and lives in Morristown, Tennessee. He joined the Lonesome Pine Fiddlers as a teenager in 1951. When he and his brother Jimmy auditioned for that job, they called themselves The Williams Brothers. He has been known as Paul Willians ever since.
In 1957, after a stint in the Air Force, Paul joined Jimmy Martin (also his brother-in-law) to form The Sunny Mountain Boys and is best known for his work with this group, including many songs which he wrote for Martin. He left Martin’s band in 1963 to work for the U.S. Postal Service, but continued to write gospel songs and lead the choir at his church in Morristown, Tennessee. In 1995, Paul formed The Victory Trio, a gospel group and in1996, retired from the
Postal Service to perform full-time. After releasing Ain’t God Good album (Rounder) in 1997, he continued to tour and produce numerous albums until 2014 when he retired from touring.

About the author

I enjoy researching Bluegrass, Bluegrass Gospel, and Country birthdays, anniversaries and interesting trivia dates. I am a piano/organ performance major who has taught privately and served as church accompanist since 1968 in North Carolina and Central Kentucky. Although classically trained, I appreciate all genres of music. My mother, who was also a church musician and taught public school music grades K-12, knew that Bluegrass music was the purest American music. She always introduced her students to this fine genre and began my musical studies with her at age 2. Bach to Berachah Valley, Mozart to Jimmy Martin, Sibelius to Stanley Brothers, the list goes on, I hope you find some moments of enjoyment and learn a few interesting facts along the way.
